Student Advocacy Day: Belarus at Risk

Beato Pellegrino Complex, Aula 4

09.06.2023

@ 9.30 AM - 7.00 PM

This Advocacy Day marks the finale to the fourth round of the Scholars at Risk: Student Advocacy Seminar, which aims at raising awareness among students about ongoing violations against scholarly communities worldwide and inspiring the younger generation of citizens to defend academic freedom.

The event brings together students, activists, university representatives, and experts who are passionate about advocating for academic freedom. It will provide valuable insights into the current state of academic freedom in Europe and beyond. Participants will discuss the challenges faced by at-risk scholars and students, particularly in the context of Belarus, and explore strategies to protect their rights.

The Advocacy Day comprises five sessions, each delving into distinct aspects of academic freedom and advocacy. These sessions cover a wide range of topics, including the exploration of existing solidarity initiatives, such as  the University of Padova’s new scholarship programme for Students at Risk,  insightful discussions on the current state of academic freedom, and unique networking opportunities for attendees. Participants can expect a rich and diverse program designed to inspire meaningful engagement and foster collaborative efforts in support of academic freedom.

International and Italian students will showcase their projects focused on promoting academic freedom in Belarus and supporting persecuted Belarusian students and scholars. This interactive element aims to foster a practical and interdisciplinary approach, engaging the student community in meaningful actions toward a socially significant cause.

In addition to the valuable insights shared by the speakers, attendees will have the opportunity to engage with Belarusian activists who have been at the forefront of advocating for academic freedom. This inclusive environment will foster an enriching experience, encouraging attendees to learn from one another, exchange ideas, and forge collaborations, all with the shared goal of promoting and defending academic freedom on a global scale.

The event closes with a poetry reading by the Belarusian poet Dmitrij Strocev and the translator of his work, Giulia de Florio (University of Modena and Reggio Emilia), followed by international dances.
